Event Information

So why OH SNAP? It all started with Sergio:

Originally from Mozambique, Africa, Sergio’s father sent him to Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX, where he attended all four years and graduated with honors. While at SU, Sergio had a profound impact on the SU community, from his professors to his fellow students. Sergio was a talented musician as well, and he sang and played guitar with a wide variety of aspiring musicians at SU. Sergio was a unique individual who had the ability to bring groups together and bring all around him to a roar with his signature jovial laugh.

After Southwestern, Sergio returned to Mozambique, and worked for three years at a successful IT company. Having just married, he was on the way to work one morning when a drunk driver going the wrong way on the highway struck Sergio’s car head-on, killing him instantly.

Sergio had a very strong impact on all of us at Southwestern, and thus, we (6 of Sergio’s friends and classmates at Southwestern) all felt it would be appropriate to hold an event to commemorate his life, with a huge festival showcasing great local music, as well as comedy, dancing, and art in 2009. We named the event OH SNAP! because it’s a phrase Sergio was well known for. We are all committed to making this event a huge success for everyone involved, while paying positive tribute to our good friend Sergio.

In a show of support and collaboration, Southwestern University has set up an official non-profit fund that we are utilizing to raise money for a scholarship to aid future international students in coming to study in Texas. All proceeds of this event will benefit the official Sergio Machado Memorial Scholarship Fund. We endeavor to make sure that Sergio’s life is remembered and can still touch and enhance others’ lives for years to come, while showcasing the BEST bands & variety acts in the live music capital of the world – Austin, Texas.
